Best From The West: Ascot – 2nd November 2019

3 minute read

Group 3 racing is on at Ascot this Saturday but they aren’t big fields.

One of those features is the Prince Of Wales Stakes and Valour Road brings in very good form lines.

The new season 4yo was very good through 2018 and then won the Euclase Stakes at Morphettville in what has turned out good form.

Maybe he was over the top in the Goodwood but then off a month break won the HG Bolton Sprint.

He now resumes with a great first up record and with the potential of some rain around, that would only help given he is unbeaten on that surface.

We will be looking for him to cross over and be near the front and controlling the tempo.

In the following race we are going to give Lady Sass one more go even though she has been beaten her last couple when well in the betting.

Don't forget she got all the way to the WA Oaks and Derby in March/April so finally stepping to 1800m is helpful.

She did race a lot closer two weeks ago and was not beaten all that far. It is a tricky start but best to roll over and try for that spot again.

This is hardly a strong race so she deserves another chance.

Coming off a game third here two weeks back in the Listed 1000m Crawford Stakes, previously four times stakes-placed Flirtini added win four and her maiden stakes success at start 12 with a rousing finish here. She settled midfield soon after the jump drifting to sixth (rails) at the 600m. Moving out from the 400m, she turned in five wide yet into the straight took some time to wind up but from the 200m flew hard, grabbed the lead at the 50m and won going away by a length. Misty Metal sat a handy fourth from the 400m, had to wait for a run and burst through at the 200m and looked a major chance but could only watch the winner fly past. From last, Stageman tracked the winner into the straight and rattled home (wide out) for third from Valour Road who tried hard in the straight but was outgunned for fourth.
