Brisbane Best: Eagle Farm – 21st December 2019

3 minute read

The Summer carnival in Brisbane is well and truly underway as we head to the Magic Millions in a month.

The big move was to bring the Grand Prix to December from the Winter carnival and we're following along the Mark Newnham success.

Mission Phoenix has only had three runs, winning two of them in good style.

Given his breeding, it comes as no surprise that he'd love getting over a journey and all the trials suggest he's needed time as well.

He has shown speed before which will be very handy given the draw and the shortish run to the first turn.

This stable travels horses well and picks the right ones so we're confident he'll run a great race.

Later on, how can you not love the way Tactical Advantage is going at present?

You therefore think even back 100m off a freshen up that he will be rattling home in the Falvelon Quality and looks an each way special.

An excellent win on Melbourne Cup day was followed by a cracking effort in The Hunter on his home track.

While he is being asked to carry 60.5kg here, he was lumping good weights this campaign against superior horses to these.

The barrier looks bad but he gets right back anyway. We suspect Andrew Mallyon will pull to the outside and rattle.

The Godolphin-raced gelding Isaurian scored a smart first-up win, his sixth win from 16 starts and his second at stakes level. He went forward from barrier 9 and settled in fourth place (one off the rails with a trail) tracking a quick tempo. He moved up well on straightening, took the lead at the 100m and then fought back to win well. The consistent Scallopini went well resuming here. He settled back in sixth place, following the eventual winner, before improving on turning for home. He moved up well to challenge at the 100m and then kept fighting well for a good second. Fiery Heights went to the front, was pressured by the favourite (Spurcraft) in the mid-stages, grabbed an advantage at the 200m and did well in holding on for third with Niccanova making late ground along the rails, without threatening, for fourth. Spurcraft faded over the latter stages to finish (6.2 lengths) sixth, looking tested by the step up to 1200m here.
