Sydney Specials: Randwick - 22nd August 2020

3 minute read

Plenty of guesswork required at Randwick tomorrow, as is the case this meeting every year.

From the four feature races, 35/48 runners are first up, the meeting looks amazing on paper, though the hardest part is trying to work out who is actually targeting these races.

The Winx Stakes the prime example.

The current market is littered with some of our best horses, though the majority of these are a long, long way from their Grand Final, Master Of Wine and Verry Elleegant the prime examples.

They are the clear picks on talent, but their talent is to the fore over a lot further, their form short of a mile leaves them coming up short.

I think the trick tomorrow is trying to identify who are the 1400m horses and then determining who are the best set up.

Dreamforce, The Bostonian, Fierce Impact and Flit appeal to me.

Both Dreamforce and The Bostonian are Group 1 WFA winners over 1500m and 1300m last preparation and both go very well fresh.

Fierce Impact went down a nose in the Orr Stakes first up last preparation and he has trialled very well in the lead up.

Flit looks the best set up, she has the fitness edge and this looks an early target, while others have their eyes on bigger goals.

No doubt we'll learn a lot from tomorrow, just hoping we get a genuine tempo and it's not a farce like the P B Lawrence Stakes last week.

Have to be patient for tomorrow as I feel the best comes up in the last.

As Brad Widdup highlighted earlier in the week, his mare Ice Bath is lucky that she is eligible to line up in this company, only rated 74.

"She's a mare that I'm lucky to be racing in this sort of benchmark, I think it should be a lot higher,'' Widdup said.

"It's going to play in her favour because I think we are in for a good spring with her."

Already Group 3 placed, she should have won the South Pacific Classic two back, before bumping into Dawn Passage prior to a break.

She was beaten 0.8L in the Keith Nolan Classic and now strikes a very winnable race first up.

Her chink is she is likely to get back, however there looks good speed engaged and she should be too strong late.
