Set weights with penalties sees several well-performed horses meet those less established on good terms. The leading hopes become fairly obvious. That seems the case in race five where the two best chances also have the benefit of being ridden by two outstanding jockeys. The clash between La Mexicana and Bella Nipotina given a little bit of extra pice by the respective bookings of Kah and Pike.
We land on Bella Nipotina and Pike. A winning record of 1/16 doesn't scream 'find me' but that win came around the Caulfield 1100m in the Quezette and she was at least that good, a little bit better even, when placed in the Darby Munro in Sydney last time.
There are no Isotopes engaged here and a repeat of the rating she posted last time would leave these hard pressed to stop her landing her second win.
La Mexicana could claim to be good enough to trouble her, and a sweet run from a low draw looks fairly assured. She had excuses in the Surround last time and may be better suited freshened up and back to Caulfield where she is two from two.
Vowmaster had promised to be about as good as that pair but that promise has fizzled with plain efforts this time around and Shelby Cobra has some talent but 1100m and a wide draw seem obvious knocks.
For an each-way play we will pluck one out of a mares raffle run as race nine.
She comes out of a stronger mares raffle up in Sydney where she midfielded it at big odds and without any luck in running.
She's again going to need some luck, and her form could safely be described as patchy, but the pick of her efforts make her as good as anything she tackles in this and double figure odds look nice compensation for her shortcomings.
