Perth’s biggest non-G1 day is New Year’s Day with the running of the Perth Cup.
The big question is can the domination of the cerise and white continue – of course this time it will be done without W Pike?
Have to have a pick in the big one and we're going to take on the dominators by selecting Stafford's Lad in the Perth Cup.
This gelding has had a long, slow prep, coming through all the lower level Listed staying races but has peaked winning the ATA Stakes last week.
He was way back last, even detached at stages. When they sprinted he was just able to tack on but once he did, he rounded them up.
The two that he beat home are the two favourites and not really sure why he's not shorter – at least against Pure Devotion on the same weight difference.
He will be back in the field for sure but saving ground all the way from the inside gate. When runs are made and they get tired, he'll be sticking on and running the 2400m out hard. May well have loved two miles better.
Now we have previously suggested Bam's On Fire has shown signs of returning to her best but not everything has gone her way.
Well if she is able to repeat the run in the Starstruck Stakes over the 1800m this time, she will be a big hope.
She was also last on the corner there and Steve Parnham went for inside runs. She got held up for about 100m and it cost her a placing.
Once clear, she flashed the last 120m and was level not far past the post.
Naturally from the draw and with her style she will be well back again but she is worth a few bob each way against this field.
