Smokin' Joey landed a boilover win in the last on Derby Day.

The $41 chance Smokin’ Joey recorded his first win since April 2012 with a surprise victory in this Group Three event.

He was back in last place in the 12-horse field to the 600 metres mark, went to the extreme outside on straightening. He then put in a fast bid to hit the lead at the 200m and he raced clear to score by almost two lengths.

Galah was ninth one off the rails to the 600 metre point before improving wide with cover rounding the home turn. He put in a good run passing 400 metres to challenge shortly afterwards and then fought on for a sound second.

Strike The Stars was ninth on the rails to the 800 metre mark before being shuffled back to last in the 400 metres. He eased wide at the 300 metre mark and came with a strong, late run for a most unlucky third while Outlandish Lad came from eighth at the 400 metres mark for fourth.
