Samantha Wynne had Gypsy Fair sitting second, one off the fence after the jump (from barrier six) and remained there until the 900m when she punched the mare out, putting pressure on the field and breaking out to a lead of more than a length passing the 700m. She sat and waited for a challenge but there was none so at the top of the straight she added more pressure and broke away by five lengths with 300m to go and dared the field to catch her. At the 150m she still had a them by two but was under heavy pressure, yet had just enough to hold on by a neck at the finish.

Platinum Command was second last and locked away on the fence at the 800m and equal last before straightening. Balanced up, she weaved between runners and came out of the pack (inner) to be the only runner with a chance, but the post arrived too soon.

New York Minute was near last at the 600m then pulled widest rounding the last corner, running home very strongly the length of the straight but much too late to endanger the first two.

Merial Ancare Marton Mile (G3)

WT: 53kg Type: OPEN

Once again the Awapuni track was an awful bog and abysmal times were clocked with sitting wide not penalized at all in many races. The G3 mile was not a strong field at all and the weights confusing and hard to accept for many so no surprise that female gallopers were the first five home. The first four home carried 53kg to 53.5kg and in the gluey conditions bigger weights must have felt like impossible imposts. Gypsy Fair had never run past 1400m until today and the 6yo mare just got home by a neck to clock 1:45.24. She is out of a Zabeel mare so should have been expected to cope and after sitting outside the leader took control at the 1000m and then slipped away turning for home. It was her sixth win from nineteen starts and the wet tracker was having her sixth run this preparation so weather permitting can still go around again but more than likely she will be aimed towards the Autumn when rain consistently arrives again. Platinum Command was huge again and probably should have won but gave away far too big a start on settling and despite swimming home at a rate of knots came up a neck short. She is standing up well to racing in what was her fourteenth run this year alone amazingly. New York Minute handled the grade rise well and ran home strongly for third after being in the rear trio on settling and this once mad leader is a changed mare ridden quietly. Hotshot Lass after taking sixteen starts to win a maiden has now since won again and finished second three times plus today rose multiple grades to finish fourth at G3. This 6yo mare alone casts doubt on the strength of this field that looked dubious prior as she only lost third the final 50m. Madonna Mia ran on strongly from well back and was the first higher weight home at 56.5kg and is also the stablemate of the winner. Duffers Creek was the first male runner home in sixth and under 60kg the effort was okay as he was fourth and wide across the top and battled away the run in. Justlikeyasister was running on a tad late while Taurus battled away fairly. The rest got beaten over ten lengths up to and including almost thirty-four lengths with many of them not even genuine Open Class gallopers. The time was just over a length superior only to the race prior that was multiple grades inferior and won easily by a form reversal 7yo mare that had last won a race in September 2015. This was not a G3 field and the footing presented was awful so not a lot can be read and should be taken too seriously from this blacktype holding mud event.
