Favourite Allergic under James McDonald was allowed to settle in fourth with a round to go. Down the back, the pace was muddling and the leader (Zero To Ten) broke clear but there was no panic from those behind. At the 800m the race changed quickly and McDonald found himself last and 200m later McDonald set Allergic alight to get into a challenging position. At the top of the straight he raced up alongside the first two but it took another 200m before he reached the lead and from there McDonald kept the gelding up to his work all the way to what ended up being a good finish.

Junoob sat third down the back, moved into second when Alegria stormed around them at the 800m and was second turning in. He challenged the leader and then stayed on best of the rest to the line, showing some spirit over the last 100m.

From last, Alegria raced around the field at the 800m, which altered the complexion of the race, and set sail for home, taking a narrow lead at the beginning of the home straight and fought well to the line for a solid third.
