Honest and consistent, Kiwi Ida, the favourite, was squeezed soon after the start from barrier seven, settling midfield (wide) but handy enough before they reached the crossing. Into the straight, rider Chris Johnson had plenty of room to challenge.

He shook the reins and slowly but surely she moved up alongside the leader, took over inside the 150m and edged clear with something in hand over the final 50m for a nice win, by three-quarters of a length, her fourth (first black-type) in ten starts.

Hot Fuss led at the crossing as well as at the 300m, gave the winner a decent tussle to the 100m but relented late yet held second well from Ajay Tee, who was last (inner) turning in and ran on best of the rest for third. Highland Lady also ran on quite well from well back for fourth.

The track at Riccarton today was a bog and with the rail out a colossal 11m it made for biased and substandard racing. This Listed 1200m for 3yo fillies only is always weakened by the fact on the same day there is a G3 3yo filly race at Hastings, so this is massively inferior blacktype and mostly for South Islanders. In fact not one North Island trained filly ran in this today so it was a very dubious line up and no surprise the favourite Kiwi Ida won with the Australian bred filly too good. Seven of the ten runners were maidens to show the glaring lack of quality. Kiwi Ida was a three-race winner resuming today and made if four from ten outings after sitting back but not too far away then coming through looking ominous turning for home. She was second at the 200m and then got to the lead with 75m to run and scored by threequarters of a length 1:16.01 and that is a dreadful time down this often bionic chute where modest types can run 1:07 and change. It was the slowest time of the day worryingly in six races over 1200m and a couple of maiden races ran superior with one of them almost six lengths faster. The Open Handicap winner ran 1:13.74 so was almost fourteen lengths superior. Kiwi Ida has only missed paying a dividend once in her ten starts and that came when travelled to the North Island and saw her finish fifth beaten over five lengths in a juvenile event. Otherwise she has only raced here at Riccarton, so whether she can measure up against the North Islanders seems very unlikely at this stage. Hot Fuss, a swimmer fresh up, tried hard after racing on the speed throughout while a maiden still in Ajay Tee ran on okay for third. Highland Lady was not too bad and is a maiden winner in waiting. The rest got beaten three lengths and up to sixteen lengths with many outclassed but some did not cope the ground at all. Greenpark Gem bounded in the air at the start and was last on settling but was warming up late down the outer. Weak field and an easy chance for South Island trained fillies to get some blacktype before an armada of North Islanders appear to raid all the loot and Stakes status.
