After five attempts at black type level Swing Note  broke through for her maiden stakes win and fourth in total with another honest effort here. She settled fourth last early (one out) as well as down the back and around the bend to the 500m before easing further away from the fence with a great view turning in.

Rider Shafiq Rusof waited until the 350m before getting serious, drove her forward between runners to lead at the 100m then stretched her neck out for the win.

Zentessa  had the run of the race one out in fourth to the straight, challenged, led briefly then battled gamely to hold second.

The Heiress ranged up widest to co lead at the 150m but was outgunned to the line, the first three well clear. Shakti came out of the pack for a distant fourth.

C'church Casino Spring Classic (LR)

WT: 53kg Type: OPEN

The rail out vast amounts today created manmade track bias and anything too far back in terms of lengths turning for home could not win all day. The winners of the eight-race card and where they turned for home in order were seventh (two lengths off lead), co-leader outer, sixth (three lengths off lead), led, second outer, led, fourth and fifth (two lengths off lead). This Listed Open Handicap saw the three 4yo mares at the bottom of the field Swing Note, Zentessa and The Heiress all carrying the minimum of 53kg be massively superior to the rest at the line. The trio had a ding donger the closing 100m and were separated at the line by just half a neck and a short head. Swing Note was winning her first race beyond a mile today having failed at 2400m twice but she did run a good fourth at G3 over 2100m as a filly behind Savvy Coup, so can stay and is now much stronger. Today the Australian bred 4yo mare raced seventh the outer relaxed and moved up an ominous fourth turning for home before reaching second at the 200m and then lodging her bid at the 100m. She dug the deepest to score and clocked 2:02.87 for her fourth win in sixteen starts with this her first blacktype success. Zentessa sat back in the rear duo early then improved wide fourth before getting over the outer only to move up wide again across the top into third and poised. She strode into the lead turning for home and looked to be holding well then with 100m to go felt a double challenge but went down fighting hard. The Heiress had up until today only raced up to and won at 1650m plus she was tackling Open Class for the first time in this and almost got it done. She settled in the rear duo and stayed there until being wide across the top then surged the run home into third at the 200m with that final 100m being a ding donger of the dames. There was a three and a half length gap back to Shakti in fourth after he got back on the inner and ran on while Elfee found 60kg a big ask and an honest fifth was her lot. Flag The Groom and Come Fly With Me raced as second and the leader respectively before wilting the run home and the rest dropped out to be beaten eight or more lengths. Who Dares Wins and Blue Lagoon were both dreadful and the former in particular, as 60kg seems to be getting too him. The domination of the three 4yo mares, the lightest tried runners in the race, was so clear cut that the older runners both male and female cannot beat upside when giving away so much weight. The second and third finishers (same part owner and breeder) gained first blacktype ever so this was not a strong G3 line up overall and paints a poor future portrait for older males gallopers in New Zealand. Swing Note was another Australian bred female galloper winning blacktype this weekend in New Zealand and this once impregnable female fortress has been breached for a few years now and is starting to be exposed. Female gallopers have so much advantage in New Zealand as everything is tailored to suit them from breeding to higher stakes and weights and more opportunities and excessive blacktype options offered. Australian bred runners are starting to pick off the 2yo and 3yo races more often and some stayers (once thought sacrilege in New Zealand thoroughbred racing and breeding) were even starting to get results.' Well now it seems the holy grail has been cracked and a ceiling broken through as fillies and mares races are now very winnable for Australian breds at blacktype level in New Zealand. The thoroughbred blacktype landscape in New Zealand has now well and truly changed forever.
