Singapore Racing - Weekend Review - Big Bad Jomo

3 minute read

Just the sole meeting in Singapore over the weekend with the Lee Freedman trained Jomo the stand-out performance.

Unbeaten in three starts, Jomo has continued to raise the bar and while facing his stiffest test, he again passed with flying colours.

A dominant winner on debut, Jomo again proceeded to space his rivals at his next start, when leading throughout on the turf track.

While there were some question marks over the form, given it did appear a Formula 1 race — that being very little changed in the order from the turn to the finish, the clock suggested otherwise.

The ol'you don't want to get too caught up on who horses beat, but moreso how they did it.

On the bare form Jomo looked to get all the favours, however when you pick apart the sectionals, his performance was still very very good.

Drawn the widest barrier on Friday night, Grylls wasted no time sending Jomo to the front, a move which invariably won him the race.

No question his main danger was three-year-old Nova Vocal and with Grylls letting rip early, it saw Placais hand up on Nova Vocal.

By doing so, it took away from Nova Vocal's main asset (speed) and in the end he was unable to run down Jomo.

Craig Grylls got it inch perfect on Jomo, when adjusting for sectional mark ups, he couldn't have ridden him any better.

Very few horses are able to make the rise from maiden company to a Class 3 event in just three starts, let alone remain unbeaten.

Still quite a raw product, suspect he will be even better when able to take a sit.

At the moment there simply hasn't been a horse fast enough to lead him, though when continuing his rise through the grades expect that to change.

Tipping the scales at 634kg, he is one of the biggest, if not the biggest horse currently racing in Singapore.

By All Too Hard he is expected to get out beyond 1200m and his bold front-running style should leave him well placed moving forward.

Not sure where Freedman heads next, however he is one to follow, along with Nova Vocal, who if pressed to lead at his next start, he should be very hard to beat.
