After often racing well in strong Group class, the Matthew Dale-trained sprinter Fell Swoop  broke through for his first win since the Victory Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) at Doomben in April 2016 in scoring here. Having his second start this preparation, he soon drove through from his inside barrier (1) to lead and then set a quick tempo.

He got a break on turning for home and he then kept fighting back strongly to score a very good win. The favourite Cradle Mountain  settled outside the leader and kept fighting gamely for (2 lengths) second, his first defeat in three runs this preparation, finding the winner, whom conceded him 4.5kg, too good, rising in class here.

Firsthand  raced in second last place in the seven-horse field, improved between runners on straightening and then kept battling on well for third. Burning Passion  raced in fourth place (deep), and kept fighting on in the straight to hold that position, beaten just over five lengths.
