After racing consistently with placings at his first three starts this preparation in Group class, the Irish-bred stayer Sixties Groove scored a strong win in this Group 2 feature.

He settled towards the tail of the 18-horse field from his wide barrier (15). Damien Oliver steered him between runners coming to the home turn, he got a split at the 300m, challenged shortly afterwards and then fought best to win well, running the 2400m out solidly.

Grey Lion raced in seventh place, tracked up well approaching the home turn, challenged the leader (Sopressa) coming to the 200m and then kept battling on well for second despite racing a bit waywardly over the latter stages.

The winner’s stablemate Big Duke raced back in 17th place, looked for runs between runners on turning for home, got a split at the 200m and then ran on nicely to take third, just in front of Sin To Win who ran on nicely from 16th at the home turn for (3.4 lengths) fourth.
