Herengawe was rewarded for some recent honest efforts, getting the nod here in a head bobber for win six (maiden stakes) at start 17. He began well, then eased to settle midfield, one off the fence past the 1200m.

From the 600m he improved quickly, rounding into the straight widest, handy to the lead. He ranged alongside to form a line of four at the 250m, co-led at the 100m, then stride for stride got his head up right on the post to score by a nose.

Mauna Kea sat third past the 800m, still third turning in, was one of four in line, then co-led but despite digging in hard was denied on the line.

Dez was back of midfield at the 600m, improved at the top of the straight and dashed through to be one of four in line at the 200m but was outfinished, holding on for third, while Nymph Monte finished well (late) to claim fourth.

This G3 Open Handicap mile saw the wet tracker Herengawe win by a nostril flare. Six of the eight winners on the day either led or turned for home no worse than fourth on footing that was if an awful holding viscous variety. The winners and where they turned for home in race order were led (two-off the inside and two lengths ahead), led (on the rail and two lengths ahead), co-leader (four-off the inside), eleventh (ten-off the inside and five lengths from the leader), third (four-off the inside and two lengths from the leader), third (four-off the inside and a length from the leader), fourth (eight-off the inside and three lengths from the leader) and eighth (ten-off the inside and four lengths from the leader). Herengawe raced sixth wide but on the Awapuni track that was presented it was not a negative on a very tacky wet track to be ridden overland. He came up fourth deeper turning in and was one-batting away with three others the final 200m and reached a close second at the 100m but never still looked like winning. It was only under a hard ride, which he had been for the final 300m to be fair, he got in the bob on the line and clocked 1:39.84. The time was 1.34 seconds faster (just over eight lengths) than the other mile on the day a Benchmark 72 (five grades inferior). Herengawe was winning his sixth race in seventeen starts and obviously it was his first Blacktype win at a third attempt. He had been a very distant Listed third (beaten over seven lengths) in July and then a distant sixth at G3 (beaten almost eight lengths), so he had struggled in Stakes class before. Mauna Kea was caught on the line after racing third and this was his second Blackype attempt having missed at G1 under WFA (finished eleventh beaten over seven lengths) in December of 2018. Dez got back on the inner then poked through closer in and led at the 250m only to be collared at the 100m but he fought hard to go down half a length in total. Nymph Monte raced fourth the outer and fought well after losing his spot and being seventh turning for home. Strolling Vagabond in new ownership colours (back to original breeder) raced seventh or either the inner and fought on well to be beaten less than two lengths. The Bandito led up and gave a good sight until headed at the 250m but then showed some fight only to be swamped the final 10m and was beaten over two lengths. Red Sierra settled well back and was running on okay as usual while the 10yo Authentic Paddy at his one-hundredth start raced second the outer and then weakened the run home. Rosewood has become a barrier rogue with slow starts and she did it again but plugged on to be beaten just over seven lengths after settling down a clear last. Art Deco only plugged away from ninth on settling then a gap was seen to Estefania the rank outsider of the field by a margin that was beaten over eleven lengths, The stayer Jacksstar was a poor second last beaten over seventeen lengths and the shocker and last home by almost twenty-five lengths was Wait A Second, a former G1 winner at WFA incredibly. This was not really a G3 race field or result as many of these have been racing each other for a few seasons and two of the least experienced Blacktype performers ran the quinella. It is wet track form and a wet track result.
