Hill Smith Stakes, Listed : Morphettville - 12th October 2019

3 minute read

Craftmanship wins Hill Smith Stakes Listed $100,000 at Morphettville, 1800m.

Geelong maiden winner two starts back, Craftmanship had the last run at them here to secure his maiden stakes win at career start four.

He was midfield (rails) from soon after the start, remaining there past the 1200m. He saved ground all the way to the 600m but was forced to wait for a run approaching the run home.

In the straight he was in behind the leaders, saw a narrow gap at the 200m, which became narrower but he drove through at the 100m, caught the leader and was doing best at the line, edging to the win by a head.

Balabaal sat just back of the winner from the 1000m, moved out wider rounding into the home straight and kept up a solid run to take the lead at the 100m but was outgunned late.

Magazine was fifth, three deep at the 600m, pulled wider to challenge at the top of the straight, led briefly at the 100m and fought hard to the post for a close up third.

From well back, Silent Sovereign ran home strongly the length of the straight for a late lunging close fourth.
