Alabama Express winning the Polytrack Gothic Stakes Picture: Racing and Sports

The Mike Moroney-trained colt Alabama Express was quite impressive in winning here, albeit narrowly.

Having his fourth start and his second run this preparation, he settled outside the leader (Hilo), put pressure on that runner nearing the home turn and kept fighting gamely for a narrow but very good win.

The favourite Hilo was smartly away and soon went to the front. He then travelled nicely, was tackled prior to the home turn and after quite a battle, he fought on for (head) second in a good performance.

Heirborn raced in seventh place, one off the rails, and then responded to riding from the home turn to take the minor placing from Defiant Dancer who was handy all the way before battling on well for (2.5 lengths) fourth.
