Travelling Light wins Barneswood Farm Soliloquy Stks Group 3, NZ$70,000 at Ellerslie, 1400m.

Travelling Light desperately needed a run at the 250m, got out and ran home strongly to maintain her unbeaten record in three starts and her maiden stakes win.

She was fourth early (rails), drifting slightly to sixth past the 800m and remained locked away towards the last corner.

Into the straight she ran into a wall of runners, saw a split which immediately closed then pulled wider. Once she saw daylight she grabbed the bit and went after the leader, keeping up a strong run to get there by a half head.

Bavella had a nice run in fifth (one out) from the 1000m, was right in behind the first three turning in and moved out to challenge from the 300m. She strolled to the lead at the 200m and looked the winner only to be run down in the last few strides.

Jennifer Eccles sat fourth last, one out, at the 600m, pulled widest into the home straight and kept up a long strong run to the line without endangering the first two.

Flaunting was handy enough turning in and battled on bravely for fourth.

This G3 3yo filly only 1400m saw a rising force in the ranks remain unbeaten namely Travelling Light score by half a head when it seemed she would have to settle for second. The rail being out 9.5m ensured no winner came from too far back with three lengths the biggest margin made up all day turning for home. The winners and where they turned for home in race order were sixth (one-off the inside and two lengths from the leader), sixth (three-off the inside and three lengths from the leader), co-leader (five-off the inside), led (two-off the inside and three lengths in front), eighth (three-off the inside and three lengths from the leader), fifth (five-off the inside and two lengths from the leader), third (four-off the inside and half a length from the leader), seventh (one-off the inside and three lengths from the leader) and sixth (two-off the inside and two lengths from the leader). Travelling Light raced sixth the inner and then was held up turning for home seventh with a wall ahead of filly rumps. She had to bide her time then drove through at the 300m and reached a distant second at the 200m before setting out after a rival that had surged clear. The will to win is immense in Travelleing Light as she never ever looked like catching Bavella until the winning post. She got up on the line and clocked 1:23.96 to make it three wins from as many starts and they have all come on different footing from good to heavy and now dead ground. It was the best 1400m time of the day at this meeting and the only race to break 1:24 as well. Today was her first Blacktype win and came at her first time of trying it and next she will tackle the G1 1000 Guineas were likely to start first or second favourite. She has never been beaten on raceday or in a trial as before racing won two trials so she knows what the wining post is for. Bavella had this race in the trophy cabinet after racing fourth or fifth the outer then surging to a clear lead at the 200m and could not get beaten even 50m out but did. She has not won a race in almost a year. Jennifer Eccles was a stupendous third and came with a big late finish from twelfth on settling and eleventh and widest turning for home. She is still a maiden but has never gone a poor race and did win fresh up this season but lost it in the inquiry room Jennifer Eccles is a winner in waiting for sure and could it be in the G1 1000 Guineas at Riccarton on November 16? Flaunting finished a brave fourth after settling back and wide, while an even gutsier run was Annie's Song that was wide in the open working fifth then fourth. Annie's Song should have dropped out rather than fight well and be beaten less than three and a half lengths. Hasstobegood settled eighth or ninth the inner ands fought on well to finish sixth. Familia trailed the leaders on the inner and then got blocked from the 300m to the 200m but got out and through in time and did not really ping. Diamonds And Galore is a total forgive as she got crowded at the start and settled back ninth or tenth the outer and when unleashing the final 100m her rider had to grab fully hold of her at the 50m. She was angled out second widest at the 200m but then strangely got angled inwards sharply and got up a full head of steam only to be restrained heavily with 50m to go. Why her rider did not go the second widest clear path at the 200m is anyone's guess. London Bound and Aalaalune both were not too bad but Aretha the second favourite was weak after sitting outside the leader. Loire was a perplexing twelfth after settling back as she never fired a shot, so unless something transpires since as an excuse it was an inexplicable loss of six lengths. Sorrentina settled down last and never got into the race while First Rock led up and stopped badly to be beaten ten lengths. There were some very good performances in this but also some downright impossible to explain shockers. It was a worthy G3 result plus it should be a rich source of many winners this season and more.
