Play That Song remains unbeaten, albeit against just four opponents each time, having won on debut at Ruakaka at the beginning of the month and was again too strong here.

She sat just back and outside the leader to the crossing then took over from the 400m. Jockey Rosie Myers gave her a reminder approaching the 200m and she went clear, perhaps a little greenly but had too much steam at the line by a length and a half.

Power 'n' Glory was in last place of the five at the crossing, improved a spot at the 400m then quickly into second soon after. He tried to go with the winner but had to settle for second while Amosia ,who was last (inner) at the 400m, pulled out and ran home quite well for third.

Wellesley Stakes (LR)

This Listed 2yo over 1000m drew an ordinary field of five runners that had two winners plus three maidens and not surprisingly Play That Song (one of the winners) won it. The track at Trentham track seems to be in heavy state of flux all year around and should be a water catchment area it gets so much rainfall annually. The winners and where they turned for home in race order were led (one-off the inside and a neck in front), led (one-off the inside and a neck in front), third (four-off the inside and two lengths from the leader), third (five-off the inside and half a length from the leader), second (six-off the inside and a length from the leader), led (three-off the inside and a length in front), second (inside on rail and half a length from the leader), co-leader (one-off the inside) and fourth (five-off the inside and length and a half from the leader). Play That Song had won her debut on dead footing clockwise easily and today encountered a heavy track left-handed but it made no difference. The filly sat second the outer and even after running wide across the junction and near the home turn once she balanced up and took the lead with 400m to go it was all over. She scored by a length and a half in 1:03.60 to remain undefeated and now has a Blacktype success on her record. Power 'N' Glory on debut sat fourth the outer and moved into third at the 400m before reaching second at the 300m and chasing gamely but in vain. He won his next start, a maiden juvenile, to add some credence to this race and result but it does not mask the fact it was three maidens against two winners. Amosia, a maiden filly, settled last the inner and ran on for third beaten four lengths to get a Listed third. The other two runners dropped out to be beaten ten lengths and over thirteen lengths, so never copped the Trentham mud that is legendary for draining all the pace and fight and life out of gallopers. Play That Song could be a real deal juvenile but this race cannot possibly tell you as the footing was appalling and the field depth was very shallow. Heavy bog tracks almost two months into Spring make for irrelevant results and form worth as the better footing should already be around but will be soon surely and that will change the pecking order dramatically.
