Returning from an unsuccessful four-race Melbourne spring campaign, The Real Beel caused an upset here making win two at start 18 her maiden stakes success.

She was back of midfield early then midfield (rails) from the 1200m. She held her position from the 800m, inched closer from the 500m and was handy enough but locked away starting the run home.

A gap opened at the 300m then immediately closed but she bumped her way through anyway and went after the leaders.

From the 150m she accelerated, ranged alongside at the 50m and kept going to score a half length.

Guillada was sixth but three wide from the 800m, moved four wide turning in but not handier then kept up a strong run to the line, never giving up, for second.

Pinmedown had four behind her at the 600m, pulled wide into the straight and kept on strongly to the line for third.

Favourite Yearn was handy turning in, switched to the rails into the straight and didn't get a run until late, flashing into fourth short of the line.

Second at the 400m Queen Of Diamonds took over soon after and fought hard to the line for fifth.

Cal Isuzu Stakes (G2)

This G2 at WFA for fillies and mares over the mile saw The Real Beel get up and win at $25 fresh up since coming back from Australia where she was demolished in all her four runs. The winners and where they turned for home in race order were fourth (one-off the inside and two and a half lengths from the leader), fourth (three-off the inside and two and a half lengths from the inside), led (four-off the inside and a head in front), fourth (six-off the inside and two lengths from the leader), third (three-off the inside and a length and a half from the leader), led (two-off the inside and a neck in front), led (on the fence and a length and a half in front), sixth (on the fence and three lengths from the leader) and third (on the fence and a length and a half from the leader). The manmade track bias was immense as the inside lane and lanes were so much faster than the rest of the track the entire day. The Real Beel was hopelessly outclassed in Melbourne and could not even finish top four in a Benchmark 78 against her own sex. Today she raced seventh or eighth the inner then came through sixth the inside before working off and into fifth and clear air at the 200m. The 4yo mare kept winding up to be third and coming swiftly at the 100m and led with 15m to go to score by short neck in 1:35.39 and record just her second win in eighteen starts. Guillada ran on strongly from eighth then sixth wide to keep coming and reach second with 10m to go. The 4yo mare was recording her first Blacktype placing. Pinmedown came with a big finish from ninth on settling to get third on the post. She was a G2 and G3 winner as a filly last season and today was her first Blacktype placing as a 4yo mare. Yearn the $3 favourite raced handy the inner then once worked off got held up but she fought hard to be beaten less than a length. Queen Of Diamonds raced third the inner and came through and led at the 200m but the filly got swamped the last 15m to finish fifth beaten just over three-quarters of a length. Red Sky At Night at $69 ran on well from the back and was held up for much of the run home. Livin' On A Prayer ran home well wide from well back at $37 and Atlanta Peach found the line well enough late from second last. The leader Lady Kartel at $42 was headed at the 200m and finished ninth but she only got beaten two and a half lengths. The rest plugged on or had no finish but the last runner home was just over five lengths from the winner. This was the race where the winner came from the farthest back all day being sixth turning in and the biggest margin made up (three lengths from the leader turning for home), so it was not an outlier in fact at all as The Real Beel was not that far away at the 400m. The first three home all ran on and the next two finishers were both close up turning in but all five were covered by less than a length at the line. The very bunched nature of the finish does make this result rather dubious and an asterisk outcome without a doubt. Three inside draws and three wide gates filled the first six positions at the line to offer no explanation or evidentiary support. The winning time was just .10 faster than the following race a Ratings 82 (four to five grades inferior) where the winner trailed the leaders, so tempo had nothing to do with it.
