Tough South Island raider Kiwi Ida , coming off an open handicap win at Riccarton five weeks ago, held on gamely to record a 13th win and third stakes success at start 40.

She got away well but soon drifted and at the 1200m mark was fifth last. She made ground from the 1000m to be back of midfield then lost her position from the 600m. Pulling wide, yet well back, she found room out in the middle of the track and accelerated to challenge. She took over at the 200m, looked to race clear, was challenged herself but held on gamely by a half-head.

Rock On Wood was midfield leaving the back straight, moved up three deep from the 600m and was poised to challenge starting the run home. He caught the leader at the 250m, but was outgunned from the 100m.

Shadows Cast was second last at the 600m, pulled wide and kept up a strong run, he flashed into third late. Secret Allure, from the back, weaved between runners the length of the straight in a good finish for fourth.

Kamada Park Manawatu Stakes (G2)

Type: OPEN

This G2 over 1400m at WFA saw the Australian bred and South Island prepared mare Kiwi Ida score a half head win after settling down eighth on a very tricky and biased wet track She sustained her finish to lead just 15m out in what was a tight finish with the first five over the line covered a by a smidgen more than a length. The winners and where they turned for home in race order were seventh (six-off the inside and ten lengths from the leader), fourth (on the fence and length and a half from the leader), sixth (ten-off the inside and four lengths from the leader), third (eight-off the inside and two lengths from the leader), sixth (twelve-off the inside and four lengths from the leader), fourth (twelve-off the inside and two and a half lengths from the leader), ninth (twelve-off the inside and four lengths from the leader) and second (ten-off the inside and two lengths from the leader). The track was a testing Slow8 and therefore wider the better was the play almost all day such was the obvious track bias. Kiwi Ida was winning her thirteenth race from forty starts and today was her first G2 attempt and it resulted in a win. She would win her next start too at G2 albeit against her own sex. Rock On Wood settled back but improved fifth across the top and kept coming the run home looking a win chance at the 100m but went down half a head. He had his chance to win so the wet ground cannot be used as an excuse for him. His next two starts would come at G1 and both be luckless for a fourth (under set weights and penalties) then a third (under WFA scale) and of course they came on better footing (dead conditions). Shadows Cast came home strongly from well back for third beaten less than a length. He would contest G1 at his next two starts and finish fifth (under stet weights and penalties) then fourth (under WFA scale) and run honest and well both times. Secret Allure enjoyed the wet ground and ran accordingly for a close up fourth. Magnum raced close and led at the 300m only to be swamped the final 15m. La Bella Rosa and Dark Princess were not too bad and fought on okay. This was a reasonable strength G2 event at WFA but the footing and associated track bias played the biggest role in the result rather than the ability of the runners. Some form came out of this unsurprisingly afterwards on better and more trustable track conditions.
