Fresh up after five months, yet with the benefit of a couple of recent trials, Who Dares Wins got the upper hand over the final 50m to score his tenth victory and third stakes.

He was second early then found the rail in third when they settled. Holding that spot inside the 600m, he only needed to get out of the box and that opportunity presented at the 200m.

Jockey Samantha Wynne pulled him three wide into the clear, gathered in the leader and then edged into the lead a few strides from the line, scoring by a half neck. The judge could not separate the next two home.

Monza Circuito sat just back of the winner in fourth past the 1200m and crept into third at the 400m. In the straight he was making no impression to the 100m then lifted gamely late for the dead-heat.

Lady Style sat outside the lead in second all the way to the last corner, took over at the top of the straight and never gave up to the line to share a game second.

Owen Patrick ran home well from second last to land a close fourth.

Craigmore Timaru Cup (LR)

WT: 53.0kg Type: OPEN

This Listed Open Handicap mile went to the 7yo gelding Who Dares Wins, a much more noted middle distance type, which prevailed in a tight finish that also saw a deadheat for second. The winners and where they turned for home in race order were led (one-off the inside and half a length in front), third (on the fence and three lengths from the leader), led (on the fence and length and a half in front), led (one-off the inside and a length in front), third (two-off the inside and half a length from the leader), fourth (five-off the inside and half a length from the leader), fourth (on the fence and length and a half from the leader), led (on the fence and length and a half in front) and seventh (three-off the inside and two lengths from the leader). To say the track raced biased towards on pacers and on the inside lanes is an understatement. Who Dares Wins sat third on the inner and kept coming in a sustained manner to get a narrow lead with 15m to go and end up scoring by half a neck in 1:34.98. He was winning his tenth race in fifty-two starts and just his third at the mile. Today was his second win at Listed level over a mile but he carried 60kg in this whereas in April earlier this year he scored with the minimum of 53kg. He has won at G3 as well but that came at WFA over 2000m. Monza Circuito sat fourth the outer and would not lay down the run home to go down narrowly fighting hard to deadheat for second. Lady Style sat second the outer after being tardy and being used up to get there and she was very brave to deadheat for second after using early energy but it did highlight the power of track bias. She was just a three win mare and having her first try at Blacktype today and but for a sluggish start almost certainly wins the race. Owen Patrick ran a good fourth beaten a length after being tardy and last away before settling back on the inner. He ran on well wide so did a good job considering the up and in track bias all day. Son Of Maher settled back on the inner but fought on well for fifth beaten just over a length. Pamir race fifth the inner and fought well while the leader Ticket To Ride was trying hard when headed at the 200m and got swamped from third at the 50m over the closing stages. There was a gap back to a plugging on Wild Jack and then another gap to a battling He Kin Fly then a much bigger gap away to an outclassed Lady Byron. Savapak was last home but got checked at the 200m albeit not going great guns at the time nevertheless he did cop an equine sandwich. The race time was five lengths faster than the next best mile time on the day so was run at a decent clip overall and it was passable as a Listed strength field in actual depth. Monza Circuito has since been second at Listed and G3 level beaten a long neck and half a head respectively.
