Bluestar Anniversary Hcp, Group 3 : Trentham - 11th January 2020

3 minute read

Germanicus wins Bluestar Anniversary Hcp, Group 3, NZ$70,000 at Trentham, 1600m.

Progressive Germanicus, having his first start at stakes level, prevailed in a crowded finish to get the nod by a nose for his fourth win (third in succession) in 13 starts.

He was slow away to be last early but improved at the 1000m yet drifted again to be fourth last at the 600m. Off the fence soon after, he went wide turning in but did not see space until the 300m then went hard for the line.

Ranging alongside the leaders inside the 100m he kept on strongly, getting his nose in front in the last stride.

Cutting Up Rough was three wide and back at the 1000m, five wide turning in and widest at the 300m but gaining fast.

He was one of four across the track at the 100m and went to the line gamely, losing narrowly.

From midfield, Scott Base got off the fence at the 600m, went wider into the straight and took the lead briefly at the 200m then fought hard to the line for a close third.

Magnum burst through to lead at the 300m, was caught soon after but fought on well to hold fourth.

The winner of this G3 mile by a lip was Germanicus that came from well back and bombed them late to lead at the 10m. The winners and where they turned for home in race order were second (two-off the inside and half a length from the leader), seventh (on the fence and four lengths from the leader), led (a head clear and on the fence), second (one-off the inside and a length from the leader), fifth (on the inside and a length away), led (on the inside and six lengths clear), fourth (on the inside and two and a lengths from the leader), twelfth (seven-off the inside and six lengths from the leader) and fifth (six-off the inside and four lengths from the leader). His minute winning margin came at just his thirteenth start of which he has now won four times and today he clocked 1:35.43 for the mile. Second home was Cutting Up Rough that had settled back in the last trio and surged home late to just miss at the line. Third home and beaten a nostril flare and a head was Scott Base that was last away and came from ninth or tenth on settling. He had raced up fifth turning for home and surged to the lead at the 300m only to go down in the shadows of the post. Fourth home was Magnum, which raced sixth the outer mostly and came through second at the 350m and fought hard to the line but was over a length away at the finish. Jessiegee was a luckless fifth after coming from last on settling and she really drove through late to be beaten less than a length and a half. Guillada was beaten exactly a length and a half after racing after being tardy early then recovering to race eighth. She fought on well from seventh at the 100m to be a close up sixth at the line. Seventh home and beaten less than two lengths was Tinkalicious that fought on from being ninth turning for home. She's Not Bad was eighth beaten two lengths after trailing the leaders while ninth and running on gamely was Son Of Maher that had raced in the rear duo the outer and been widest and twelfth still at the 200m. Pep Torque raced ninth and wide all the way and did not chuck in the towel to finished tenth and be beaten two and a half lengths. There was a gap back to eleventh in Owen Patrick beaten almost five lengths and the rest came home beaten five lengths and as far as eleven and a half lengths to the last finisher Hinerangi. The first ten home were covered by two and a half lengths. It was a busy finish and the equal least winning runner in the field with 3 wins before today in Germanicus prevailed by the smallest margin.
