Keep an eye on: Tricky Gal

Randwick - Race 9: Tricky Gal

One to keep an eye on from Saturday's Randwick meeting is Mathew Smith-trained mare Tricky Gal.

Returning from an 11-week let up, the daughter of Magic Albert jumped on terms from her wide gate (13) in the Group 3 The Nivison but was quickly restrained to gain cover by jockey Alysha Collett.

Given a cold ride by Collett, the pair faced quite the challenge when straightening many lengths back with all runners ahead of them. Collett opted to stick to the inside running, saving ground as she slowly started eating into the margin.

Biding their time and in dire need of a run, Collett steered her mount through a tight passage to gain a rails run when passing the 100m. In clear running, the mare let down forcefully as she made a last-ditch effort to salvage victory, only to finish just under a length away in second.

With her quick closing sectionals, the mare added another placing to her impressive first-up record (5:3-2-0). Stepping out in trip in proceeding runs, Tricky Gal is one definitely worth following.
