Race 6: Key Largo

One to keep an eye on from Wednesday's Gosford meeting is the Bryce Heys-trained Key Largo.

Returning a gelding, the son of I Am Invincible was well supported ($4.60) in the market over the 1100m journey.

Having been sharpened for the first-up assignment with two sound Warwick Farm trials, the five-year-old jumped fairly from his barrier (6) before quickly being restrained by jockey Alysha Collett  in the hopes of gaining cover.

In doing so, the pair settled rearward in a three-wide position and due to the lack of tempo Collett's mount raced ungenerously through the middle stages.

Taking off at the 400m, Key Largo sprinted up four-wide when rounding the home turn and was then taken wider by another runner shifting out on him.

Having to be steadied, the five-year-old regathered his momentum and swiftly worked through his gears down the outside.

Attacking the line, the gelding fell narrowly short on the winning post with the official margin of 0.24L.

It looks as though Key Largo has come back from the gelding a better galloper and with a touch of luck next time he should be extremely hard to hold off.

Race 3: Marnix

Another one that is worth following from Gosford is Richard Litt-trained three-year-old Marnix.

Resuming off a freshen-up for his new stable, the ex-Godolphin runner jumped on terms from his inside draw (1) but struggled to keep up with the early speed, taking a sit a touch worse than midfield on the rails.

With the pace on, the Written Tycoon gelding continued to drift back in the run and found himself with a bit to do when approaching the home bend.

With many lengths to make up, jockey Jason Collett got stuck into his mount prior to the 400m as they straightened the widest runner.

Although it took until passing the 200m for Marnix to pick up, the gelding accelerated nicely to the line rapidly taking ground off his rivals.

Beaten a long neck, Marnix looks close to a win and should be cherry-ripe to score at his next outing. Blackbook.
