Samaready Returns A Winner

3 minute read

Samaready has leapt into calculations for the spring's big sprints with a terrific first up win in the listed Theshark.com.au Stakes (1100m) at Caulfield.

Samaready was stepping out for the first time in a year and just the second time in eighteen months but the Group One winner had class on her side and it showed as she stalked the pace around the turn and gunned down a brave Chiaramonte to win with something in hand.

Anise caught the eye late, getting up for third along the fence, while the well fancied Jolie Bay raced back and wide and was never a factor.

The win is a feather in the cap of connections, headed by trainer Mick Price, who have been rewarded for their patience with the mare.

“The main thing is that she is physically right,” Price said.

“We've only given her gentle trials and been a bit gentle with her.

“I was a bit concerned as last time she had a big tear in her backside so if she had of run well and just run into the money and been beaten today at least I would have known that she was on the right track.

“The race worked out perfect, it was a patient ride by Craig, and onwards and upwards from here and now we know that she can handle race day pressure.

Price indicated that the feature sprints at Moonee Valley, the Group One A.J Moir and Manikato Stakes, were now firmly on the agenda for his star mare.

“I'd like to chase those weight-for-age races at Moonee Valley with her.”

The 2012 Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Samaready scored a good win, having her first run in just over 12 months. She began well and Craig Newitt settled her nicely in fourth spot. She was giving the leader about five lengths as she improved from the 600m and then came with a well-timed run to take the lead at the 100m. She then drew clear to score well by just over a length, her fifth win in only seven starts. Chiaramonte showed good pace from his wide barrier (12) and raced outside the leader (Hadronica) before getting to the lead to the 200m. He then fought back very well for a good second. His Darley stablemate Anise was ridden patiently and settled ninth on the rails. She was about eight lengths from the leader at the 600m, went back to the rails at the 200m and made good ground to grab third at the post. It Is Written was back in sixth place to the home turn. He put in a run on turning for home and continued to battle on nicely for a sound fourth. Neeson was back in fifth place on the rails to the turn. He kept fighting on quite well in the straight to hold that position to the post. Jolie Bay and Pocket Rockets, who were prominent in the betting, were both well back most of the way and disappointed finishing a disappointing 11th and 12th respectively.
