Luckless North Melbourne forward Mason Wood is unlikely to take part in the pre-season AFL competition after suffering a broken thumb.

Wood picked up the injury during last week's intra-club match and will be unable to take part in full-contact training for about three weeks.

"He doesn't require surgery and the crack is very small and the injury, overall, a minor one," North football boss Cameron Joyce said.

"We expect him to be available for round one as he'll be able to complete all of the strength and conditioning components of the program.

"He's had an excellent pre-season up until now and that should hold him in good stead."

The 24-year-old has played 26 games in four years at Arden Street and is yet to feature in an AFL season-opener after a wretched run with injury.

He hasn't yet managed to play more than 10 games in a season, with his 2017 campaign cruelled by hamstring, calf and knee injuries.

The Kangaroos' pre-season preparation will go up a notch when they take part in the AFLX competition at Etihad Stadium on Friday night.
