KEY MOVES IN THE 2018 AFL TRADE PERIOD:

* Lachie Neale (Fremantle to Brisbane) - The two-time best-and-fairest winner made it clear he had fallen out of love with the Dockers, who eventually granted his wish to become a Lion on deadline day. The Dockers got picks 6,19 and 55 in return.

* Jesse Hogan (Melbourne to Fremantle) - For so long Hogan was a symbol of hope for long-suffering Demons fans, but the time had come for them to mutually part ways. Having battled injury and lost his father to cancer, the key forward departed after 152 goals in 71 games. The Dockers sent picks 6, 23 and 55 to Melbourne and also got 30 back from the Demons.

* Chad Wingard (Port Adelaide to Hawthorn) - A move that seemed inconceivable not so long ago, and remained unpalatable for many Port fans, unfolded with Ryan Burton and pick 15 arriving from the Hawks. Alastair Clarkson has a two-time All Australian forward to help fill the void left by Cyril Rioli's retirement.

* Dayne Beams (Brisbane to Collingwood) - Without 'officially' requesting a trade, Beams got his wish to return to Collingwood, where he was part of the 2010 premiership team. At 28, the two-time best-and-fairest winner still has plenty to offer the Pies, who coughed up pick 18 and next year's first-round pick

* Dylan Shiel (GWS to Essendon) - The All Australian midfielder made it clear he wanted to go to Essendon early on, but the Giants and Bombers were locked in a stare down until deadline day. Essendon blinked first and gave up two first-round picks for the 25-year-old.

* Steven May (Gold Coast to Melbourne) - The co-captain played his cards close to his chest but the Suns wanted him out once it became clear he wasn't going to commit to them long term. The Demons also landed winger Kade Kolodjashnij for the well-travelled pick No.6.

* Tom Scully (GWS to Hawthorn) - This one came out of left-field and was largely a product of the Giants' salary cap squeeze. Doubt surrounds Scully's ankle injury, but the Hawks' ability to land a former No.1 pick for a fourth-round selection was the biggest steal of the trade period.

Think. Is this a bet you really want to place?
