Sydney could potentially offer delisted Geelong forward Daniel Menzel an AFL lifeline.

Swans list manager Kinnear Beatson said the former Cat would soon undergo a medical as the delisted free agency period opened on Thursday.

"There's a possibility," he told SEN when asked if there was a spot for the 27-year-old.

"Daniel is heading back to Melbourne soon. Once we've got all the facts, we'll make a decision on which way we go there."

The Cats cut Menzel last week after 73 games, 136 goals and four knee reconstructions since making his debut in 2010.

But his manager Adam Ramanauskas remained hopeful the goal-sneak would get an opportunity to extend his AFL career, with up to five clubs shaping as potential suitors.

The Swans are yet to find a direct replacement for Gary Rohan after the speedy midfield/forward joined Geelong this trade window.

But Menzel may have competition for the seemingly up-for-grabs role.

Beatson confirmed Sydney has already met with axed Richmond premiership forward Jacob Townsend as well as delisted Fremantle defender Cam Sutcliffe.

The Tigers hope to retain Townsend as a rookie for next season but gave their blessing for him to search for a new home.

The delisted free agency window closes on November 16.
