Bombers need to lift across board: coach

3 minute read

Essendon's starts to matches have been poor so far this season, but coach John Worsfold says a lift across the board is required.

Essendon are yet to kick a first-quarter goal this season but, it's not just his team's starts that are of concern to John Worsfold.

The Bombers found themselves behind the eight-ball early and never recovered in losses to GWS and St Kilda, with a Friday night clash with fellow strugglers Melbourne now a must-win proposition.

While getting off to a good start against the Demons at the MCG will be a key factor, Worsfold is demanding improvement across the board.

"We have addressed (the starts) but we're focusing on how we want to play overall," Worsfold said.

"We haven't played well, regardless of starts, throughout the course of whole games.

"We know the first game was really disappointing in terms of overall energy the players took in but they really bounced back last week and we've got to build on that.

"We're disappointed with our first two games but we're focusing on the next 20 and getting back to playing our best footy as quickly as we can.

"That's our absolute focus."

Essendon could be boosted by the return of key tall Cale Hooker from a calf injury, but Joe Daniher will remain sidelined by his calf complaint for at least another fortnight.

The Bombers have been criticised for a lack of on-field leadership and perceived confusion about the game plan as their struggles have continued.

Worsfold is dismissive of such barbs.

"In terms of the way that we want to play the game the players are very clear on what we want to be seen as and what they want to be talked about (as)," he said.

"I wouldn't say that there has been a lack of (on-field) direction, but the ability to execute that hasn't been good enough.

"I think we've got an exceptional group of young leaders and they are going to continue to grow and be awesome leaders for this footy club for a long time."

Think. Is this a bet you really want to place?
