Lions coach keeps a lid on fast AFL start

Brisbane coach Chris Fagan knows his team's AFL season start is exciting but is also aware nothing has really been achieved yet.

Three AFL matches, three wins.

Not since a Brendan Fevola-inspired Brisbane began the 2010 season with four straight victories have the Lions started a year like this.

Premiers West Coast were defeated in their opener and then a run of six losses to North Melbourne came to an end with a 20-point victory at Marvel Stadium last weekend.

On Saturday it was a see-sawing, fast-finish 17-point win over Port Adelaide at the Gabba which lifted the Lions to a flawless 3-0 record.

Almost 20,000 fans turned up to watch the Lions surge past the Power in the final four minutes with a three-goal burst which sealed another important win for Chris Fagan's team.

But if you think the Lions coach is starting to dream of what might be possible in 2019, you'd be wrong.

History shows that 2010 team won just three more matches after their four-game winning start and missed finals - with Fevola's Brisbane stint ending in early 2011 when he was sacked by the club.

Fagan is clearly wary of getting too carried away by his team's fast start.

"We can keep a lid on it because we've only won three games. It's not even as many as we won last year or the year before that," Fagan said.

"Next week we've got to go to Melbourne and play at the MCG and we've got to play Essendon ... the challenges just keep coming for us.

"Maybe at some point in time this year we might have won enough games to win finals but who knows? I can't predict that.

"We will try very hard to not get ahead of ourselves, even though I know it's exciting for everyone to watch this team grow and develop."

Think. Is this a bet you really want to place?
