Sydney are searching for a suitable AFLW ground, the final obstacle they must clear to be part of expansion in coming years.

The AFLW will expand to 14 teams in 2020.

The expectation is that all 18 AFL clubs will have AFLW sides by 2023, when the league's next broadcast deal will start.

A $55 million revamp of Royal Hall of Industries in Moore Park will ensure the Swans have a new AFL training base and the capacity to host a women's side in readiness for the 2021 season.

Swans chief executive Tom Harley confirmed his club will push "aggressively" to join the AFLW but only after finding a venue.

Tramway Oval, which will become the Swans' training base as part of the $55m Moore Park project, is the most likely home but Marrickville's Henson Park is another option that has been floated.

The redevelopment of Allianz Stadium means that space is already at a premium in Moore Park.

"Playing grounds are still a challenge for the code," Harley said.

"We do really need to unearth more grounds in the heart of Sydney ... to look for a longer, more sustainable solution in the eastern suburbs of Sydney.

"In Sydney we don't have the maturity of grounds like other states, so we just need to explore all avenues."

The AFLW season overlaps with the end of cricket season, ensuing the SCG and many suburban venues are off limits.

"You really need to find a ground that doesn't have a cricket wicket," Harley said.

"At the moment Tramway Oval is just a playing surface. A really great playing surface, so I think we should explore what that could look like."
