St Kilda skipper Jarryn Geary will miss up to 10 weeks following surgery to repair a broken leg suffered against Port Adelaide in Shanghai.

Luckless St Kilda skipper Jarryn Geary will undergo surgery on the leg he fractured during his side's heavy AFL loss to Port Adelaide in Shanghai.

In his first game back from a gruesome right thigh injury, the 30-year-old suffered a clean break to the fibula in his left leg and will go under the knife in Melbourne on Wednesday.

"After consultation with doctors and specialists, we believe surgery is the best option for Gears," said Saints football chief Simon Lethlean.

"It's extremely frustrating and disappointing, especially given Jarryn's professionalism throughout his recent rehab and determination to return to playing.

"But incidents like this are the unfortunate, uncontrollable reality of football.

"At the moment it's looking like an 8-10 week recovery period, but we'll know a bit more after the surgery."

Geary was rushed to hospital after a round five win over St Kilda and underwent emergency surgery to relieve pressure on a corked thigh.

He spent a week in hospital with an open wound that ran the length of his thigh, that eventually required almost 50 stitches and staples.

Geary's latest setback continues a tough run for the Saints who have lost Jake Carlisle (back), Jack Steven (mental health), Paddy McCartin (concussion), Jack Lonie (knee), Dylan Roberton (heart) and Dan Hannebery (hamstring) for extended periods this season.

In better news for Alan Richardson's side, Hannebery is closing in on a club debut after his high-profile off-season switch from Sydney.

The midfielder escaped his first VFL game last weekend unscathed but won't get the chance to build his case for an AFL return with both teams having their bye round this week.

"I'll get a solid week of training in and reassess in the next week or two," Hannebery said of his return.

"My gut feel is at least another one or so games in the VFL, but we'll wait and see."
