North Melbourne defender Scott Thompson has had surgery to repair a ruptured testicle.

Thompson was hurt in Saturday's loss to Brisbane when he was accidentally hit in the groin by an opponent's foot.

"He came off the ground for treatment for about 10 minutes and managed to play out the game," North's football manager Cameron Joyce said in a statement on Monday.

"He was monitored by our medical staff throughout the night."

Thompson consulted a specialist on Sunday on return to Melbourne.

The veteran backman had a procedure to reduce the swelling and repair the testicle, Joyce said.

"It was a pretty quick procedure and he was discharged last night," Joyce said.

"He has been back at the club this morning and is hoping to play this week. We'll give him until the last minute to show he's able to play."

The Kangaroos travel to Perth to play West Coast on Saturday afternoon.
