Collingwood star Jordan De Goey will need everything to go right if he is to play in the AFL grand final.

The Magpies confirmed on Saturday that De Goey suffered a right hamstring strain and defender Levi Greenwood ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee during Friday night's qualifying final win over Geelong.

While the win puts Collingwood into a preliminary final, teammate Taylor Adams said the devastating news about Greenwood meant there were tears in their change rooms post-match.

The Pies immediately confirmed De Goey would not be ready for their preliminary final in a fortnight.

Given he returned on Friday night after four games out because of an injury to the same hamstring, De Goey is at extremely long odds to recover in time should Collingwood win through to the September 28 grand final.

That would give De Goey only three weeks and the accepted wisdom is that if a player re-injures a hamstring, he needs a longer period of recovery.

"As we all know, talking beyond the prelim is a bit adventurous," coach Nathan Buckley told Triple M.

"We just know he won't be there for our next game and that obviously puts a bit of a hole in our plans."

The news was also bad on Saturday for Greenwood, who most likely will need a knee reconstruction that will sideline him well into next season.

The 30-year-old revealed this week he had signed a one-year contract extension.

"He puts his heart and soul into the club, there was a lot of tears in the rooms after the game," Adams said of Greenwood.

Immediately after the match, Buckley had praised Greenwood for his demeanour on the interchange bench after the injured defender was forced off the ground, saying he was still trying to help teammates.

But in better injury news for Collingwood, key defender Darcy Moore showed no signs of hamstring trouble and in fact starred in the last quarter as Geelong pressed.

Moore had resumed from a hamstring injury in round 23 and did not play out the game because of hamstring tightness, also raising fears about his finals readiness.

Meanwhile, Buckley hailed Collingwood's pressure on Friday night, with the Magpies laying a whopping 95 tackles.

"Our ball pressure was as good as we've been able to achieve," Buckley said.

"Our pressure numbers were through the roof ... it was a crucial aspect."

Also on Saturday, Collingwood ruckman Brodie Grundy was charged with striking Geelong midfielder Patrick Dangerfield.

But Grundy can accept a $2000 fine and does not face suspension.

Think. Is this a bet you really want to place?
