Shaun Burgoyne will play at Hawthorn for an 11th season after signing a one-year deal, rejecting interest from Gold Coast.

Hawthorn star Shaun Burgoyne will stay put, signing a one-year deal that takes his much-lauded AFL career into a 19th season.

The Hawks confirmed the new contract on Wednesday, with Burgoyne rejecting interest from Gold Coast.

Nicknamed Silk for his skills, Burgoyne became the AFL indigenous games record holder this season and has played 376 games.

Burgoyne is the oldest current player and turns 37 on October 21.

He is seventh on the all-time AFL games list, two behind Essendon ruckman Simon Madden and seven away from St Kilda onballer Robert Harvey.

Then comes the 400-game club - North Melbourne forward Brent Harvey (432), Hawthorn's Michael Tuck (426), Richmond's Kevin Bartlett (403) and Essendon defender Dustin Fletcher (400).

Given he needs 24 games to reach 400, Burgoyne will struggle to achieve the milestone next season.

He would need to play every game and for the Hawks to have two finals.

The veteran played 18 games this season and 17 the year before.

Hawks list manager Graham Wright told the club website that they are thrilled Burgoyne is staying.

"He has put a lot of time into this decision, weighing up the best option for both he, his family and the club, so we're really pleased with the outcome," Wright said.

"He's such an integral player for us and his influence extends far beyond his on-field ability.

"He sets a great example for his teammates through his work ethic and professionalism, and he is an incredible advocate for his fellow Indigenous players.

"After 18 seasons, Shaun is showing no signs of slowing down which is a testament to both his talent and strength of character."

Burgoyne made his AFL debut at Port Adelaide in 2002 and played 157 games for the Power, including the 2004 premiership.

He joined the Hawks after the 2009 season and arrived on crutches, having had knee surgery.

But the move quickly proved outstanding for Hawthorn and he was a key player in their 2013-15 premiership three-peat.
