Essendon defender Aaron Francis enjoyed his best AFL season in 2019 and the 22-year-old has now committed his long-term future to the Bombers.

Essendon defender Aaron Francis has re-signed with the Bombers until the end of 2022.

The versatile key position player had his best season this year, playing 17 games.

Francis also turned in a standout performance in the Bombers' elimination final loss to West Coast, recording 20 disposals and nine marks.

"Aaron is an incredibly talented footballer and is an important part of the future of this club," Essendon general manager of list and recruiting Adrian Dodoro said in a statement.

"Over his four years on our list, we have seen him mature into a fine young man, showing he is committed to growing his game at the Bombers.

"His best football is well and truly ahead of him and we look forward to seeing what he can achieve over the next few years of his career."

Francis was drafted at pick No.6 in the 2015 AFL draft but had a difficult start to his career.

He requested a trade back to South Australia at the end of 2017, which fell through, then took leave for mental health reasons at the start of 2018.

But Francis returned to play the final five games of 2018 and kicked on this year.

"I am loving my time at the club and I'm fully committed to working hard on my game so I can increase my impact on the senior side," Francis said.

"There is an exciting feeling amongst this group and what we can achieve together over the next few seasons, and I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to be a part of it."
