Richmond chief Brendon Gale says the Tigers have asked the AFL why they've only received a second-round draft pick as compensation for losing Brandon Ellis.

The AFL's compensation system for free agency has come under scrutiny, with Richmond requesting a review of their compensation pick for Brandon Ellis.

The Tigers elected not to match Gold Coast's offer to Ellis - believed to be a five-year contract - and were given a second-round draft pick (currently pick No.39) as compensation.

Last year, West Coast received an end-of-first-round pick when Scott Lycett joined Port Adelaide on a five-year contract while, in 2017, Geelong received an end-of-first-round pick when Steven Motlop joined the Power on a four-year deal.

Richmond chief executive Brendon Gale took to Twitter to express his disappointment with the compensation pick and confirmed the Tigers had asked for a review.

"We were very disappointed with the offer of a 2nd Rd pick for Brandon Ellis and asked the AFL to review it," Gale tweeted.

"AFL has since explained that the points allocated (based on age & average $$$), fell just short of the points required for the awarding of a 1st Rd pick in 2019."

Ellis, 26, played 176 games across eight seasons for Richmond after being drafted at pick No.15 in 2011.

He is a two-time premiership player with the Tigers.
