AFLW to overlap with start of AFL season

3 minute read

More AFLW-AFLW double headers are on the cards, with the AFLW fixture set to overlap with the men's pre-season and home and away season.

The AFLW season will overlap with the AFL pre-season and home and away season, opening the door for more double-header fixtures.

On Monday, AFL general manager of broadcasting Travis Auld confirmed the AFL will book a number of AFLW-AFL double-headers during both the men's pre-season and home and away season.

The AFLW fixture will be released on Tuesday, with the AFL home and away fixture to be announced on Thursday.

"This year you'll see the AFLW competition will run through the pre-season competition and into the men's competition," Auld said at the fixture announcement for the 2020 Marsh Community Series.

Auld confirmed there would be a number of AFLW-AFL double-headers.

"We're certainly planning to have a few double-headers, both into the pre-season competition and the men's home and away," he said.

"Clubs have been really keen to make that work. It's complicated in some ways to do it with different venues and travel schedules and everything else but we'll get a number in, yes."

On Monday, the AFL confirmed every team would play two pre-season matches over the course of three weeks between Thursday 20 February and Monday 9 March.

St Kilda will play at the redeveloped Moorabbin for the first time, opening the 2020 pre-season with a game against Hawthorn at their spiritual home.

Neither West Coast nor Fremantle will leave Western Australia, and 2019 grand finalists GWS and Richmond will play in Wagga Wagga.

Whyalla (SA) and Lathlain (WA) are two venues to host their first pre-season games, while other regional venues include Wangaratta, Colac and Morwell.
