The Sydney Swans have paid a financial price for their rare finals absence, recording the AFL club's first net operating loss in nine years.

Sydney revealed on Friday they had posted a net operating loss of $509,625 for the year ending October 31.

It is the first time the Swans have failed to record a profit since 2010.

The club noted in a statement that the 2019 loss reflected several factors, including increased operating costs and the impact of not reaching the finals.

Sydney's average crowd at the SCG was 31,070 in 2019, while the club signed up a record 61,912 members.

John Longmire's men finished 15th on the ladder this year, during which crowd-drawing superstar Lance Franklin was only able to play 10 games because of injury.

It was the first time since 2009 that the Swans failed to qualify for the finals, also marking the fourth time in 24 years they weren't part of September action.
