Gaelic footballer McShane turns down AFL

3 minute read

Gaelic footballer Cathal McShane has decided against a move to Australia to join AFL side Adelaide.

Adelaide have confirmed that Gaelic footballer Cathal McShane has decided to remain in Ireland and not pursue an AFL career.

Tyrone forward McShane, who was named as Ireland's best full forward in 2019, had been weighing up a move to Australia after joining the Crows for a 10-day trial last month.

"It is a big decision to relocate to the other side of the world and pursue a professional career in a different sport," Adelaide list manager Justin Reid said.

"Ultimately, this was not something that Cathal was ready for and we wish him the very best in his endeavours both on and off the field.

"We will continue to look for opportunities to bring talent into our club."

McShane, 24, finished as the Championship's joint top scorer in 2019, and is now expected to rejoin Tyrone for the 2020 season.
