GWS could blood another AFL debutant in round two, with highly-rated draftee Lachie Ash in the mix for a call-up should Adam Kennedy succumb to a hamstring injury.

The Giants defeated Geelong by 32 points in a promising start to their quest for redemption after being embarrassed by Richmond in the 2019 grand final.

Kennedy's first-quarter setback was the only notable negative for GWS coach Leon Cameron on Saturday night, when his team kicked a remarkably accurate 17.3 (105).

Cameron suggested the defender had a tight hamstring and was "pretty determined to come back on" but the club made a conservative call.

"If he's not right for next weekend then ... we've got a lot of players that would really look forward to the opportunity," Cameron said.

"Jackson Hately, Lachie Aish, Jye Caldwell, Sam Reid.

"These guys are itching for a game. Because there's no other games on.

"If he's right then clearly we'll pick him. But if he's not, one of these guys will get a chance."

The Giants next face Melbourne at the MCG on Saturday; presuming the season isn't put on hold because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Ash was taken with pick No.4 in last year's draft, while Tom Green went at No.10.

Green made his debut in round one, locking horns with Geelong's star-studded midfielders.

"He came on in the first quarter and had (Patrick) Dangerfield and (Joel) Selwood standing next to him. That's a big ask," Cameron said.

"His composure got better and better as the game went on, we put him forward and he had some really good moments.

"We're really rapt with how he's going."

"It's a unique set of circumstances for him (to debut), his parents and his family got in to watch him which was great."

Think. Is this a bet you really want to place?
