AFL contract extensions may effectively be on hold but GWS are confident of retaining star forward Jeremy Cameron for whatever the future has in store.

GWS are "very hopeful" star forward Jeremy Cameron will commit to the Giants beyond 2020, despite the uncertainty of the current AFL environment.

Cameron qualifies for restricted free agency at season's end but has hinted he wants to remain a Giant, though no contract paperwork can be finalised while the AFL manoeuvres through the financial impact of the competition's coronavirus-inspired suspension.

"With Jeremy, we're not that far down the path but we've had really good progression in those discussions," Giants football boss Jason McCartney told Fox Footy Live.

"But everything with player contracts has come to a halt as well because there's a lot of uncertainty.

"Obviously the collective bargaining agreement goes through to the end of 2022 but you would imagine now, with the players and the AFL settling on what the pay reduction is until the end of this year, we'll need to then have a look at what the next two years are.

"You never do know until it's signed off on but (Cameron's) actions around the club ... he's jumped into the leadership group this year for the first time, which is a great sign.

"He's going really, really well in that capacity, enjoying himself and enjoying his football up until the last couple of weeks.

"So it feels like it's heading in the right direction. We're very hopeful, that's for sure."

Cuts to list sizes, along with the soft cap, have been flagged as potential money-savers within the sport.

McCartney does not believe proposed cuts would hurt the Giants' depth in the short term, but said it would be disappointing to lose list spots often assigned to development players.

"We've got great depth and that's the fantastic thing about the footy club and people that have been before me that have built it up to the really strong position we find ourselves in today," he said.

"But it'd be disappointing because you do lose some of those players at the back that are not your high-end talent but they're developing nicely in (the) development program."
