Western Bulldogs president Peter Gordon is stepping away from the AFL club after a second stint which proved to be just as successful as the first.

Peter Gordon, one of the most integral figures in the Western Bulldogs' AFL history, is to stand down as president of the club.

The prominent lawyer will step down at the Bulldogs' annual general meeting later this month, paving the way for Kylie Watson-Wheeler to become the second female president of an AFL club.

Richmond's Peggy O'Neal is in charge at the Tigers who have claimed three of the last four premierships.

Gordon's second tenure as Bulldogs president will end on December 21.

The lifelong Bulldogs supporter first served between 1989 and 1996, spearheading the campaign to save the club, then known as Footscray, from merging with Fitzroy.

Gordon returned in 2012, watching on as the club secured the 2016 premiership under coach Luke Beveridge - the Bulldogs' first senior flag in 62 years.

He believes the Bulldogs are in such a strong position it is time for a fresh approach at the top.

"It's a good time for me to move on and for the club to move on too," Gordon said.

"I'd like to sincerely thank everyone who has supported me and offered me their friendship over the journey.

"It's been an honour and a privilege to hold the position with many enjoyable moments for my family and me.

"I've had a few regrets, but then again, as Frank Sinatra once put it ... too few to mention."
