Magpies AFLW coach Symonds signs on

3 minute read

Days out from the AFLW finals, Collingwood AFLW coach Steve Symonds has signed a contract extension until the end of 2023.

Collingwood AFLW coach Steve Symonds has committed to the Magpies for another two seasons.

Symonds joined the Magpies from Norwood in June 2019 and has played a crucial role in turning their AFLW fortunes around.

Collingwood made the 2020 finals - losing to North Melbourne in the semi-finals - and kicked on this season to finish third on the ladder, earning a home qualifying final.

The Magpies failed to play finals in their three previous seasons.

"Steve has played a crucial role in advancing the women's football program and developing our players,"chief executive Mark Anderson said.

"The program's results speak for themselves. He came to us with a strong record and reputation for development - something like 48 players coached by Steve are in the AFLW system - and with Collingwood he has shown why.

"The two finals campaigns are one thing but his impact has been greater than results themselves. Steve has established an environment with a strong work ethic where talent is nurtured.

"We are confident that the program will continue to develop under Steve's leadership."

The Magpies will host the Kangaroos in an AFLW qualifying final at Victoria Park on Saturday.
