First-year forward Logan McDonald feels ready to grab his AFL chance with both hands after being called up to retake his place in Sydney's attack alongside mentor Lance Franklin.

McDonald shone early in the season, kicking three goals on debut and seven in his first three outings as the young Swans took the competition by storm.

But the 19-year-old was sent to the reserves after round five to work on specific aspects of his game and build a platform for a long career at the top level.

He responded with eight goals in four VFL appearances and has been recalled for Saturday's clash with St Kilda at the SCG.

"It's just been about getting my movement back, feeling comfortable and giving me a rest," McDonald said.

"I've been working on things that I probably can't do at AFL level, things with my body work and finding ways to beat my opponent."

Originally from WAFL club Perth, McDonald has added about six kilograms to his 196cm frame since being taken with pick No.4 at December's national draft.

"I'm feeling a lot heavier and it's just learning how to deal with all that sort of stuff in the first year," he said.

"I'm learning to play with that and it's been a good challenge, but I'm loving it.

"I'm feeling a lot stronger, a lot more confident in my body, and I've been able to adapt to those changes."

Franklin is closing in on becoming the sixth player in AFL/VFL history to kick 1000 goals and has been a vital sounding board for McDonald during the early stages of his development.

The pair will look to stretch St Kilda's tall defenders, with experienced stopper Dougal Howard working in tandem with second-gamer Oscar Clavarino.

"Me and Lance have a really good relationship and we have a lot of fun off the field as well," McDonald said.

"He's helped me a lot on the field and helped me get better, and running out alongside him is always really good.

"It's just constant tips and tricks, helping me with my movement and running and patterns.

"He's probably the greatest player to play the game, so to learn off him every day is awesome and it's something I don't take for granted."

Ruckman Tom Hickey, Robbie Fox and Joel Amartey were also picked as the sixth-placed Swans (7-4) made several unforced changes to the team that beat Carlton last week.

St Kilda (5-6) have regained Hunter Clark after a week out with groin soreness as they attempt to square their season ledger and edge closer to the top eight.

Think. Is this a bet you really want to place?
