Jarryn Geary, Mason Wood and Max King all suffered injuries in St Kilda's disappointing nine-point defeat to Sydney at the SCG on Saturday.

St Kilda's injury crisis has hit a new low as luckless veteran Jarryn Geary faces another stint on the sidelines with a dislocated right shoulder.

Co-captain Geary was hurt during the dying stages of Saturday's nine-point loss to Sydney at the SCG, which put a huge dent in the Saints' (5-7) finals hopes.

Mason Wood was substituted out of the game with a hamstring issue before halftime and Max King re-injured his back, which he initially hurt at training during the week.

The blows came after Saints coach Brett Ratten said he had just 27 players to pick from against the Swans.

Geary was still trying to get his right shoulder back in place up to 20 minutes after the match and was taken to hospital.

"He was in a fair bit of pain," Ratten said.

The tough utility player's latest setback could have wider ramifications.

He turns 33 later this month and is out of contract at the end of the season, having signed a one-year deal last September.

Geary missed the start of the 2021 campaign because of a broken leg from a training mishap in January.

He also missed most of 2019 because of a broken leg and compartment syndrome and has played just 24 of a possible 53 games since the start of that year.

"You feel for him because every time he gets into a bit of a groove and gets some continuity into his football, he cops another injury," Ratten said.

"I don't know what it means for him.

"It might be surgery, it might be rest and recovery, I'm not sure - it depends what damage there is."

King hurt his back on Thursday but was cleared to play against Sydney and ended up kicking 1.1 from just four disposals.

"He did an amazing job to play," Ratten said.

"He got through to get up for the game and then re-hurt it at halftime.

"We just positioned him as a deep forward and create a contest is all we asked him to do.

"I thought it was pretty encouraging for a young man to just push through and they're some of the things that you learn along the journey."

Wood is expected to miss about three weeks, while King will have a light few days as he attempts to recover in time for St Kilda's clash with Adelaide in round 13.

That match is scheduled to be played in Cairns next Saturday night, but the Saints are still waiting on confirmation from the AFL amid a raft of fixture changes brought about by Melbourne's latest COVID-19 outbreak.
