North Melbourne captain Jack Ziebell has signed a new two-year contract, tying him to the Kangaroos until the end of 2023.

North Melbourne have re-signed captain Jack Ziebell, a week after fellow veteran Robbie Tarrant opted to leave the rebuilding Kangaroos.

The 30-year-old has signed a two-year contract, tying him to North until at least the end of 2023 with an eye on playing out his entire AFL career at the club.

Ziebell's signature is vital as the Kangaroos aim to lift themselves off the bottom of the ladder after claiming the club's first wooden spoon since 1972.

He has played 239 games for the Kangaroos, spending the last five seasons as captain.

"Jack's been a star of the club on and off the field ever since he set foot in the place," North football manager Brady Rawlings said.

"The negotiations took a little bit of time to work through, but Jack was comfortable with how things were progressing right through the process.

"Playing down back was a new experience for 'Ziebs' and he took to it like the professional we know he is.

"He was a calming influence when things were pretty rough early in the season and his leadership was invaluable as we turned things around in the second half of the year."

Tarrant will join Richmond during the trade period after agreeing to a two-year deal with the Tigers.
