Randall hurt as Crows beat Roos in AFLW

3 minute read

Adelaide captain Chelsea Randall has hurt a hamstring in the Crows' AFLW 13-point win against North Melbourne.

Adelaide believe captain Chelsea Randall has avoided serious injury after a scare during her AFLW side's 13-point victory over North Melbourne.

Randall was put on ice after landing awkwardly following a marking contest in the last quarter of Adelaide's 5.7 (37) to 3.6 (24) win at Norwood Oval on Sunday.

Her right knee was iced and strapped but the Crows are hopeful scans will only show a low-grade hamstring injury.

The Crows' dual premiership skipper missed the entire 2021 season after having a right knee reconstruction.

"I just felt a little sudden tightness ... so we will just have a little look at it this week and go from there," Randall told Fox Footy.

Randall's scare took some gloss another Adelaide win highlighted by a four-goal haul to attacking ace Ashleigh Woodland.

A week after kicking four majors in the season-opener, Woodland repeated the feat against the plucky Kangaroos.

Woodland combined well with Stevie-Lee Thompson (15 disposals, one goal) in attack while teammates Anne Hatchard (29 disposals, 14 marks) and Erin Phillips (23 touches) were outstanding.

The Crows have now banked consecutive wins to start the season.

And the Roos have a win and a loss despite the best efforts of midfielders Ashleigh Riddell and Emma Kearney.

Riddell, who tied the league disposal record of 35 touches in round one, collected 27 possessions against Adelaide while the influential Kearney gathered 23.

The Roos trailed by just seven points with three minutes remaining before Woodland capped her remarkable match by scoring the sealer.

Woodland kicked the sole early goal as Adelaide led 1.1 to 0.2 at quarter-time before skipping clear early in the second term with two goals in two minutes.

And Woodland featured in both: she booted her second major after showing astute judgement to mark a high ball and, 90 seconds later, was involved in the chain of play which resulted in Thompson converting a set-shot from 20 metres.

Thompson's strike gave the Crows a 17-point advantage but North responded to the threat with their first major after Sophie Abbatangelo marked and goaled from 30 metres out.

Adelaide, with their dual AFLW best and fairest winner Phillips collecting 14 touches - one shy of North's Riddell - held a 3.3 to 1.3 halftime lead.

And Woodland extended that lead to 19 points early in the third quarter with her third goal coming after a strong mark when holding front position against North's Jasmine Ferguson.

The Kangaroos then rallied, with an Ellie Gavalas goal in the 13th minute helping to reduce Adelaide's advantage to 4.4 to 2.5 at three quarter-time.

And after a 14-minute scoring stalemate in the final quarter, the visitors had a sniff of an upset when Jasmine Garner goaled - only for Adelaide's standout Woodland to reply two minutes later to settle the result.
