Chris Lynn helped lay the foundations of a fine 34-run win for Kolkata Knight Riders on Sunday as they saw off Mumbai Indians to stay in the hunt for an Indian Premier League playoff berth.

Australian batsman Lynn struck a solid 29-ball 54 alongside opening partner Shubman Gill (76 off 45) before West Indies allrounder Andre Russell took centre stage at Eden Gardens.

Birthday boy Russell blasted a brutal 80 from 40 balls - including eight sixes and six fours - to help build an imposing 2-232 total.

The Jamaican then continued to celebrate turning 31 by claiming two wickets and a brace of catches as Mumbai were restricted to 7-198 in reply, Kolkata snapping their six-game losing streak to win their 100th IPL game.

Earlier, Delhi Capitals moved top of the table as they became the second team to book their place in the playoffs thanks to a 16-run win over Marcus Stoinis' Royal Challengers Bangalore.

A 68-run second-wicket partnership between skipper Shikhar Dhawan (50) and skipper Shreyas Iyer (52), plus an unbeaten 28 from West Indian Sherfane Rutherford helped home side Delhi post 5-187.

And the Challengers were unable to overhaul that target, despite knocks of 23 from skipper Virat Kohli, 39 from his opening partner Parthiv Patel and a late unbeaten cameo from Australian allrounder Stoinis, who whacked 32 off 24 balls before being beaten by the increasing run-rate.

Amit Mishra and Kagiso Rabada also played their part with two wickets apiece to help steer the Capitals into the playoffs for the first time since 2012.
