Steve Smith has fallen victim to another contender for catch of the World Cup, after New Zealand's Martin Guptill took a one-handed screamer to remove him at Lord's.

Smith middled a full-blooded pull shot off Lockie Ferguson on 5 that looked bound for the backward square boundary, before it was intercepted by Guptill.

Fielding inside the ring at leg gully, the New Zealand opener reacted by diving to his left and latching onto the ball to remove Australia's former captain.

Making the catch even more remarkable is the fact Guptill is right-handed and he took it with his unnatural hand.

It also came after the New Zealand veteran had earlier grassed two separate chances to remove Aaron Finch and Usman Khawaja earlier.

The wicket left Australia in early trouble at 3-46 in their group match.

It's the second time in the tournament Smith can claim to have been unlucky with his dismissal.

The 30-year-old went for 73 against the West Indies when a running Oshane Thomas plucked a ball out of mid-air at Trent Bridge earlier this month.

Thomas had to throw the ball in the air before he ran over the boundary rope, before returning to the field of play and reclaiming the ball.
